When It Happens To You

Your heart sinks as you hear the diagnosis; it’s a cancerous tumor and it must be removed as soon as possible.
Everything came to a standstill. This was the second time in my life that my soul stood still. I felt myself moving into a blanket of silence, shutting out the world around me. The words echoed inside my head, there was silence. I have cancer! It was the milestone I never expected. All I could think of was; what have I done to my body, how could I have let this happen to me?

How can I have cancer?

Things moved swiftly after the diagnosis. The surgeon was adamant, the tumor was 8 cm and needed to be removed as soon as possible. The cancer was only in one breast and not the other. It was only a matter of time before the other one was cancerous. Surgery, a bilateral mastectomy, and at the same time reconstruction.

It’s not all your fault

I still could not believe it! How on earth could I have a cancerous tumor. “It’s not all your fault,” the surgeon said reassuringly, “we live on a toxic planet.” Now what? The next step was to see if the cancer had spread beyond the breast area into the rest of the body because they had discovered lymph nodes above the tumor were cancerous. I was still reeling and felt out of control. I couldn’t even find the energy to be optimistic, instead I slumped into the chair. I looked out the window of the surgeon’s office onto the world. The sun was shining… and this was my life, diseased.

What have I done to my body?

Even if the world we live in is toxic, I thought I was eating healthy… but then my life had been collapsing around me for the last five years. I had lost the incentive. Nothing ever worked out. Everyone was always too busy to connect, they had their lives and I was only good enough when they had a problem.
